Freiburg im Breisgau (City Map) is located in the southwest of Germany on the edge of the Black Forest and close to the borders of both France and Switzerland. (It is not to be mistaken with Fribourg or Freiburg in Switzerland.)
Travelling by airplane:
The Euro Airport Basel Mulhouse (EAP) is the closest to Freiburg. A shuttle bus runs regularly between the airport and Freiburg. Information about the bus schedule and fares can be found under: http://www.freiburger-reisedienst.de/de/airportbus/fahrplan.php
Arrangements for special shuttle services can also be made. For this, please see: http://www.freiburger-reisedienst.de/de/airportservice/information.php
Other possibilities are the airports in Frankfurt (FRA), Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airpark (FKB) or Zurich (ZRH). From these airports, you can easily reach Freiburg with an Inter City Express (ICE) train in roughly two hours (departure times can be found at http://www.bahn.de/).
Travelling by train:
Freiburg is connected to the German Rail’s Intercity Express network. View train schedules and book tickets at: http://www.bahn.de/.
Directions from the main train station/bus stop (Freiburg Hbf/ZOB) to the conference venue:
Freiburg’s inner city is only a ten-minute walk from the main train and bus station (Freiburg Hbf/ZOB). Leave the train station using the building’s main exit, walk right towards the main bus station (ZOB). You will pass both McDonalds and the InterCityHotel Freiburg. Once you have reached the main bus station you will see a bridge above you (train station bridge), along which the trams run from the station into the city center. Cross the pedestrian crossing under this bridge and walk straight up Bertoldstraße which runs along the bridge/tram line. Keep walking straight until you reach the theater/ tram stop “Stadttheater” (you will pass a cinema on your way). Turn right at the theater heading towards the university library (giant glass building, has been compared to the death star). Directly opposite the university library you will find the conference venue Kollegiengebäude I (KG I) (tall building, gold letters read “Die Wahrheit wird euch frei machen”, its entrance is facing the street). There is another entrance a bit further down the street at the Platz der Universität. This is the main entrance and it is flanked by the statues of Homer und Aristotle.
From the train station bridge, take one of the following trams: Nr. 1 direction Littenweiler, Nr. 3 direction Vauban, Nr. 4 direction Zähringen or Nr. 5, direction Rieselfeld. Exit one stop later at the city theatre (Stadttheater). Tickets may be purchased using the automatic ticket machines at the tram stops or on the trams. Single ride costs 2, 30€. On exiting the tram head towards the university library (giant glass building, has been compared to the death star).
We would recommend that you walk this one stop from the train station to the conference venue as the tram ride takes less than a minute (roughly a 5 min walk).
